The Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club has recently just appointed Bruce Tarran as the Head Coach. Bruce comes with a wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and experience to bring to the club, and we are happy to have him at the club.

Here is a out-take from a recent email to members from Bruce:

ABOUT MYSELF: I am an LTA Licensed Professional Tennis Coach, and have been coaching for 20 years, most recently as Head Coach at Penzance Tennis Club in Cornwall and before that for 13 years as Head Coach at Totteridge Tennis Club in North London.

I grew up in Hampshire, representing the County at junior and senior level. I have spent the greater part of my life playing competitive tennis and I love it!

I have always been very much a “club coach”. I enjoy coaching adults at every level, individually and in groups. I have particular experience teaching juniors of all ages, from beginners upwards. My last two clubs each achieved LTA Performance Status, and I have individually coached a large number of National standard juniors, including two junior National Champions. My goal is to see all my junior pupils achieve their potential, whatever that potential may be. In the time honoured phrase “Being as good as they can be.”

I am generally available for individual lessons at a rate of £25 per hour for Leicestershire Members, although through February and March I am offering lessons at a 20% discount, ie: £20 per hour. I can be contacted on 07958 494182.

SUNDAY ADULT AMERICAN DOUBLES TOURNAMENT:

Open to all members, on Sunday 25th March, arrive at 1.50pm for a 2pm start. Entry fee of just £5 for over 3 hours of fun(tastic?) tennis. Tea of sandwiches, cakes and (more) tea provided. Prizes and new balls. Date to be confirmed - Look for sign-up sheet on Noticeboard.

PARENT/CHILD DOUBLES TOURNAMENT:

Saturday 10th March, from 3pm until 6.30pm. Open to any junior aged 16 or under, plus a parent (or grandparent). At least one member of pairing must be a club member. £10 per pair, to cover balls, light tea and prizes. Date to be confirmed - Look for sign-up sheet on Junior Noticeboard.

CLUB OPEN DAY:

Sunday 1st April. Club Open Day from 10am to 1pm. This is April Fools Day, of course, but should still be taken seriously! Any club needs a regular supply of new members to keep it fresh and thriving – an Open Day is a good vehicle to do this. Date to be confirmed – watch the noticeboard for more details.

JUNIOR MATCHPLAY:

Thursday 15th February, 9am to 4pm. This has been organised by the incredibly hard-working Jane Gadsby (phone 07814 122567 for details). Jane also attended the junior fixtures meeting and generally gives an enormous amount of her time to The Leicestershire Junior section.

LADIES COACHING SESSIONS

FOR 4th to 6th TEAM are being arranged. These will run on Thursday evening for 4 weeks from 1st March. Please watch the noticeboard.

IN GENERAL:

A wide range of group coaching opportunities will also be provided.

I hope, particularly, to expand the adult program, including team groups, the mini tennis program to attract larger numbers of children at the “base”, and the junior performance program to make the best of those children coming through. I would also like to provide more competitive opportunities. Full details of adult and junior coaching for the summer, including Easter camps, will be sent out about three weeks before Easter.

I am very much looking forward to becoming an integral part of The Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club.

  • Mixed ‘pay-as-you-play’ group coaching on Saturday afternoons with BTCA coach Tony Blackburn
  • One-to-one tuition and tactics coaching

Junior Coaching

  • After-school Mini Tennis group coaching on Mondays and Thursdays
  • Development group coaching on Friday afternoons
  • Introductory group coaching on Saturday mornings
  • Junior group coaching on Saturday mornings 
  • Performance squad coaching on Friday afternoons
